What is Registration?
KAU
Engineering offers students ample outlets of opportunity to plan their courses
for each semester. Whether meeting with
academic advisors, or registering for classes using ‘ODUS Plus,’ Faculty of
Engineering students at KAU are positioned to make the best choices of study
that suits their individual drives and talents.
The robust KAU ‘ODUS Plus’ electronic services system is based upon the
internationally known ‘Banner Student Information System’. It is able to handle
different plans of study for the same program and accounts for different
equivalent courses in fulfilling prerequisite requirements. The system is used
by the whole university, with the latest addition being the ‘Academic Advisor
Module' which has been in effect since the Spring 2014 term.
When do I meet my advisor, preregister, or add-drop courses?
Preregistration
Period
This period lasts for three weeks before
the new term begins. The student is
required to meet his academic advisor to discuss the courses for the upcoming
semester. Thereafter he/she can preregister online using ODUS Plus, which mandates
the prerequisites automatically.
Departmental
Add-Drop Period
During this period, which consists
of the first two weeks of the semester, the student may(through the department)
register for a course for which the prerequisite management has not yet been
automated. Permission of the Academic Advisor and the Department Head are
required, and the registration is ultimately approved by the Head of the Academic
Affairs Unit, as well as the Vice-Dean for Academic Affairs.
Vice-Dean’s
Office Add-Drop Period
During Weeks 3 & 4 of the
semester, the student may(through the Vice-Dean’s Office) add and drop courses
in exceptional circumstances. During this period, academic advisors review the
class schedule of their advisees, and request changes if any discrepancies,
errors, or prerequisite violations are discovered.
Note: At the end of the registration
period a report is produced through ODUS Plus that details any prerequisite
violations. If any are found, they are forwarded to the Department Head for
review. The Department Head then forwards any corrections to the Office of the
Vice-Dean to have the courses with prerequisite violations dropped, and may request
that other courses be added if applicable. The student is then informed of any
changes to his/her schedule and encouraged to discuss them with the academic
advisor, who will send any final requests to the Department Head, who in turn
will forward them to the Vice-Dean’s Office for approval.
How do I postpone, discontinue, or continue my
studies?
Postponement and
Discontinuation of Studies
|
A
student may apply for postponement of their studies, which is subject
toapproval by the Faculty Council, for a period not exceeding two consecutivesemesters
(or three alternate semesters).
Moreover, a student’s application is valid only after completingat least
one semester with a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 or higher.
|
|
If
a student stops his/her studies for one semester without submitting an
application for postponement, the following will apply:
|
|
-
|
If
the period of discontinuation is more than two semesters and for reasons rendered
unacceptable by the Deanship of Admissions and Registration, the student's
registration will be canceled. However, he/she may apply to rejoin the
university as a new student.
|
|
-
|
The
discontinuation period will not be counted as a part of the fixed period for completion
of an academic degree.
|
|
-
|
A
student who withdraws during his/her first semester may apply to rejoin the
university as a freshman.
|
Continuation of
Study
|
The
basis for continuation of study in the university for a student is to maintain a
‘Good Grade’academic standing, which is equivalent to a cumulative grade point
average of 2.75.
|
How does my attendance affect my registration?
Regular Attendance
|
Students
must attend at least 75% of the total number of registered classes. If a student is absent more than 25% in any
course without an acceptable reason he/she will be denied access to the
remaining classes of the course and its final exam, and will be given ‘Denial
Grade’ (DN) status. The student can
submit a request to the Faculty of Engineering’s Academic Affairs Unit to
attend the final exam, only if he/she can provide documentation to express a
legitimate excuse for absence. With this, their absences should not exceed 50%
of the course.
|
|
Sick
leave is only accepted on the basis of a medical report issued by the Medical
Center of the University, or one endorsed by it. The sick leave should be
submitted within 5 working days of the student’s absence; otherwise, it will be
subject to further scrutiny by the Office of the Vice Dean for approval.
