What is a typical study load?

Maximum:18 credit hours per regular semester; 9 credit hours in a summer session

Minimum: 12 credit hours per regular semester

The registered credit hours are determined as follows:

Ÿ

A student having a cumulative average of 2.75 or more may register for up to 18 credit hours.

Ÿ

As an exception, a student who is expected to graduate may register for up to 24 credit hours if his/her cumulative average is equal to 2.75 or more.

Ÿ

A student who has a cumulative average of less than 2.75 may register for up to 15credit hours.

Ÿ

As an exception, a student who is expected to graduate may register for up to 18 credit hours if his/her cumulative average is less than 2.75.

How do I add and drop courses?

Ÿ

A student, upon approval of his/her academic advisor, may drop one or more courses up to the end of the fourth week of the semester.

Ÿ

A student, upon approval of his/her academic advisor, may add one or more courses up to the end of the first week of the semester, if their GPA allows.

Ÿ

A student can withdraw from the whole semester up to the tenth week of each semester.

Ÿ

In some exceptional cases and upon recommendation of the Academic Advisor and approval of the Vice Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, a student may withdraw from one or more courses. Approval for withdrawal may be granted on condition that the student has a minimum number of 12 registered credit hours after withdrawal.

What if I’m transferring?

Transfer from Other Universities

A student may transfer from another university to the

Faculty of Engineering at KAU if the following conditions

are satisfied:

Ÿ

The academic degree pursued by the student at the original university is substantially equivalent to the Bachelor of Science degree granted by KAU.

Ÿ

The student should have a minimum GPA of 3.5 out of 5.0, or equivalent.

Ÿ

The student should not have been dismissed for disciplinary reasons from the institution he/she is transferring from.

Ÿ

The student must complete (at KAU) at least 50% of the credit units required by the KAU degree.

Ÿ

Transfer students may transfer the courses taken in their previous institution provided they are deemed equivalent to the corresponding KAU courses. For such equivalence to be granted, three criteria must be satisfied:

§

The two courses are determined to consist of essentially the same content by the concerned KAU department or program.

§

The number of credit units of the course(s) at the previous university is at least the same as it is for the KAU course(s).

§

The student must have passed the course with an equivalent grade of C or better.

Ÿ

Transfer courses are listed in the transcript, but will not contribute to the student’s cumulative GPA at KAU.

Ÿ

The transfer is administered by the Deanship of Admissions and Registration.

Transfer from within KAU

A student may transfer from a ‘science track’ college inside KAU to the Faculty of Engineering only once, if a chance is available. They may do this in accordance with the following admission terms and conditions:

Ÿ

The student received a grade of at least 75% in each of the following courses: Math 110 and Physics 110

Ÿ

The student must fulfill one of the following conditions:

§

a combined average of at least 80% in the three-course group: Math 110, Physics 110, and English ELI 104

§

a combined average of at least 80% in the two-course group: Math 110and Physics 110, and get a score of at least 32 in the TOEFL iBT Test, or show equivalent competency in English via another internationally standardized test

Ÿ

The student has a cumulative GPA of 3.5 out of 5 or higher.

Ÿ

The student must have completed at least one full academic year (beyond the foundation year) at the other faculty before becoming eligible to transfer to the Faculty of Engineering.

Ÿ

The transfer is administered by the University Deanship of Admissions and Registration.

Transfer applicants satisfying the above conditions are placed in the general pool of candidates and undergo the same admissions process, which is competitive based on available seats and the student's GPA. The courses taken by a student in their previous faculty and required for the KAU Engineering degree will be transferred according to the Faculty of Engineering course transfer policy. All courses previously taken by the student (whether required for the degree or not) do remain on the student’s record and are included in the cumulative GPA calculation.
